Girona beat Alaves in the Copa del Rey Round of 32 to progress for the first time in their history.
After losing the first leg against Abelardo’s Alaves, Girona had it all to do on Wednesday evening as they looked to overturn the result.
The visitors dominated and a Pedro Alcala own goal gave them the lead, but a late flurry from the hosts saw goals from Alex Granell and Portu send the onlooking Montilivi faithful into raptures.
Their passage to the last 16 is the first time in their history, making the result an historic one.
New deal for Valery
Valery Fernandez and Girona have agreed a new deal which will see the youngster extend his contract until 2023.
The B player, joined FC Barcelona’s La Masia in 2011, after representing Girona FC and Palamós CF. Released in 2014, he returned to Girona before joining Primera Catalana side FC L’Escala, where he made his senior debut at the age of just 15.
Fernández made his professional debut on 31 October 2018, starting in a 2–2 away draw against Deportivo Alavés, for the season’s Copa del Rey.
Cristhian Stuani now leads the battle for the Pichichi
Last season Christian Stuani had his best goalscoring year in his career with 21 goals in La Liga.
With his goal this weekend against Atletico Madrid, the Uruguayan is now the top scorer in Spain, having already bottled 11 goals in only 14 games. If he continues this way, he will surely beat his goal tally from last year.
Right now, there is actually a chance for, that Stuani could put Luis Suarez or Edinson Cavani on the bench for the national team. At the moment, he is definitely scoring more goals than both of them.
