Mauricio Pellegrino has said he fancies a Copa del Rey with Leganes this season after they beat Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday evening.
What happened at Vallecas?
After a 2-2 home first leg draw, Leganes knew that they needed just one away goal to progress and they did just that on Tuesday.
Despite only having 23% possession at Vallecas, Pellegrino’s men took full advantage of Emiliano Velazquez’ misfortune as he put the ball into his own net.
The tie could well have gone in favour of the home side Rayo, who had a total of 16 shots during the game and missed a penalty in the process
Lunin the hero
One of the main reasons behind that victory over Rayo was keeper Lunin, who proved to be vital – saving Bebe’s penalty.
The on-loan Real Madrid stopper has found some real form of late and his clean sheet against Rayo firmly helped Pellegrino’s side get through to the next round.
Former Southampton boss Pellegrino chose to speak about the youngster during his post match press conference, saying: “Lunin has been good tonight and for the penalty. It is good because he can take a performance like this and build his confidence..”
Focus on Madrid derby with Getafe this weekend
Leganes face close neighbours Getafe at the weekend, but Pellegrino has discussed how he would love to take on the challenge of the Copa del Rey.
“I am excited by the optimism of a good run,” he told reporters. “I think the best is yet to come from this team, we have many things that we have not completed yet. We have a team made up of experience and youth.
“We are young and hopefully we can all keep growing together.”
