Real Madrid and River Plate will hold transfer talks over the signing of Exequiel Palacios after the Copa Libertadores, says agent Renato Corsi.
Madrid have been in heavy contact with the Argentine side since earlier this year, despite River president Rodolfo D’Onofrio claiming the Spanish club have been ‘disrespectful’ in their approaches.
The midfielder has a current release clause at River set at €20m and Madrid are keen to pay that amount, offering him a five year contract in the process which they hope can be tied up for January.
Palacios, who has previously been scouted by Manchester City, has been in superb form of late but will miss the Copa final
His agent, Corsi has said that a deal is now likely to be discussed after the final at the Bernabeu.
“Palacios is hurt that he cannot play the Copa final in El Monumental, a dream for him as a River Plate fan,” Corsi is cited as saying by Diario AS.
“It is also true that he wants to play in another beautiful stadium (the Santiago Bernabeu) and in a country like Spain, so it would be fantastic if he can then become a player for Madrid.
“The clubs have not yet discussed anything, Madrid conduct themselves very well and are always upfront and honest.
“Both teams have agreed to talk after the final, it will be discussed in Madrid.
“There are more teams interested, but Real Madrid have the advantage.”
So who is Palacios?
Palacios comes from a town called Famaillá in Argentina with around only 22,924 inhabitants.
However, his parents quickly moved to Buenos Aires in San Martín – where he began his football career at Junta Vecinal José Ingenieros.
Later on, Palacios joined River Plate and made his senior level debut in Argentina’s Primera División in November 2015 at 17 years old.
After 45 minutes against Newell’s Old Boys, Palacios had to wait another five months for more senior level action.
But Palacios’ potential was clear from the start and he is now a valued member of River Plate.
The Argentine has managed four goals and five assists across 38 appearances in all competitions.
Palacios even rejected an offer to join Serie A club Torino last year and earned his first two caps for the Argentina senior team in September 2018.
Interestedly, the youngster idolises Real Madrid midfield duo Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
Other players he admires are Lucho González along with Andrés Iniesta and Lionel Messi.
