Aitor Elizegi has been appointed as the new president of Athletic Bilbao after winning the elections.
The Basque club have had a drastic season and sit dangerously near the bottom of the La Liga standings.
Change came just before the winter break in terms of management as Eduardo Berizzo was sacked from his role and replaced by Gaizka Garitano.
Results have not changed on the pitch though, but the club’s fans are now optimistic about a potential change in ways after Josu Urrutia was replaced as president by Elizegi, a local chef and businessman.
Elizegi narrowly beat Alberto Uribe-Echevarria, the accountant and close friend of Urrutia in the voting on Thursday.
Promises of a new philosophy and change in direction, Elizegi has a big task on his hands at the San Mames.
The voting which was a record high in the club’s history saw Elizegi win 9,264 votes, whilst Uribe-Echevarria had 9,179.
781 votes were blank, whilst 116 were declared vote, although the reason for that is unknown.
Athletic face Celta Vigo on La Liga’s return to action after the winter break and they will need to pick up on their form after drawing their previous two league games to Alaves and Real Valladolid.
