Athletic Bilbao have agreed a deal to re-sign Ibai Gomez from Alaves, reports Inside Athletic.
The Basque attacking midfielder has been in superb form for Abelardo’s high-flying Alaves this term, prompting a number of Spanish and European sides to show interest in his expiring contract.
Gomez sees his current deal set to end in June but it has now been all-but confirmed that a €4m agreement has been reached between his current club and his former.
Inside Athletic, who are the Premier Source of Athletic news in English – report that a deal was reached on Tuesday between officials, despite an initial stumbling block over the transfer fee.
Athletic now have three games in a row against Sevilla, meeting them on Thursday evening and next week in the Copa del Rey, whilst they meet them in league action at the weekend.
San Mames’ boss Gaizka Garitano will now hope to have Ibai Gomez available for the league game at the weekend with an official club announcement set to be made on Thursday or Friday.
Contract terms are said to have been agreed and is claimed to be a three-year contract, although wages have not been reported.
The signing signals a change at Athletic after the presidential elections which saw Josu Urrutia replaced by Aitor Eligezi.
