Alaves face a trip to Catalonia on Saturday evening to take on a Girona side who have climbed into the top half of La Liga.
Girona vs Alaves – Estadio Montilivi – Saturday 12th January – Kick off 5:30pm UK time
Abelardo’s side have been punching above their weight in the first half of the season and as a result, find themselves in fourth place, just two points behind Sevilla.
The Basques have beaten Valencia and Real Sociedad in their last two games but were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Saturday’s opponents just last month.
Girona have drawn their last three games in all competitions, including the first leg of their Copa clash with Atlético Madrid on Wednesday night, but their last league win was way back in November, 3-1 at Espanyol.
It was the Catalans who came out on top in the last clash between the sides, winning 2-1 at home to progress 4-3 on aggregate in the Copa. In La Liga last season, the away side won both meetings, Girona 2-1 at the Mendizorrotza while a late Ibai Gomez hat-trick saw Alaves come from behind to win 3-2.
Johan Mojica (cruciate ligament), Aday Benitez (knee) and Patrick Roberts (thigh) will miss out for the hosts through injury while there are doubts over Pere Pons and Carles Planas. The front three of Cristhian Stuani, Portu and Borja Garcia are likely to retain their place in attack.
Rodrigo Ely and Jony are Alaves’ only injury worries but they will have to deal with the loss of Ibai Gomez who earlier this week sealed his return to Athletic Club for €4 million, with Ruben Sobrino expected to take his place.
