Girona and Alaves shared the points at Montilivi on Saturday afternoon to keep the visitors in fourth place.
Abelardo’s away side have been in fantastic form this season, but they knew approaching the trip to Catalonia that Girona would provide a sturn test.
Girona’s excellent presence in La Liga has been largely down to the goals scored by Uruguayan forward Cristhian Stuani, and he made no mistake when he scored from Pedro Porro’s excellent cross in the first half.
The game, which was fairly even, kick started back into an end to end affair shortly after the break and that led to the leveller when Borja Baston blasted home a close range effort.
Baston came close to giving the visitors all three points shortly after but he failed to convert another close range effort.
And, Anthony Lozano, would suffer the same misfortune late on for the home side as he sent his close header just wide of the goal.
The result leaves the visitors in fourth place, above Real Madrid, whilst Girona remain in 8th place in the league standings.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Leganes beat Huesca but Valencia failed to beat Real Valladolid, being held at the Mestalla to put head coach Marcelino under even more pressure.
