Athletic Bilbao beat Sevilla 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at San Mames thanks to a brace from Inaki Williams.
The two La Liga clubs have three games in a row having been drawn in the Copa del Rey last-16 round and with Sevilla winning in midweek – they arrived as favourites.
However, it took a superb performance from the Basque hosts and in particular – Inaki Williams, who ended a two year goal drought at home.
Williams, who was making his 100th consecutive game in the league for Athletic – gave them the lead midway through the first half, cutting in from the left wing and smashing home a superb effort into the top corner.
It proved to be his first goal at home since scoring against Eibar in December 2016 and it delighted the home crowd.
Sevilla, who have pushed both Atletic Madrid and Barcelona this season in the title race, failed to get back in the game.
Dutch forward Quincy Promes came closest to a goal for the visitors but his long range effort in the second half hit the post and from then on – it was just a small chance for Ever Banega that the Andalusians could muster.
Williams, who was in superb form – then added a fantastic second – running three quarters of the pitch, before rounded the Sevilla keeper and slotting home.
