Diego Godin and Juanfran see their contracts at Atletico Madrid due to expire in June and questions are now rising on whether they will remain at the club.
Full-back Juanfran has been a great servant to the Wanda Metropolitano club, having moved to from Osasuna in January 2011.
The 34-year-old’s 300 appearances in that time since have made him one of Diego Simeone’s most reliable players but his contract is now due to expire in the summer and no negotiations have taken place over a renewal.
Speaking to reporters following the 1-0 win over Levante, said that he wants to remain at the club and does not see his career ending elsewhere.
“Atleti are the club of my life, I would like to stay,” Juanfran told reporters. “My hope is that the club renew me and that they still see me as a valuable player, who can put in a level of performance adequate of the team and our Coach.
“I will never create a problem here regardless if whether I leave in the summer or in future years, this club will always mean the world to me. I hope to do whatever the best thing is for the club and I am sure that Diego Godin and Filipe Luis will do the same, they care about the club like this too.
“The players are never the most important thing about Atleti but I believe my presence here can benefit the team going forward.”
Godin, who is at the heart of the Atleti defence has been linked to a large number of clubs in recent weeks, all of which are hoping to take full advantage of his expiring contract.
Inter Milan are said to be extremely keen with multiple reports claiming talks have already taken place with the Uruguayan’s agent.
Simeone, who watched on as his side beat Levante on Sunday – told reporters after the victory – that he wanted the centre-back to remain at the club.
“My idea is for Atletico Madrid to continue with Diego Godin, he is fundamental for us,” Simeone told reporters, as cited by Marca.
“He is our captain and a great leader in the team, he has played three fantastic games in a row and we want him to maintain this incredible level.”
A goal from Antoine Griezmann sealed the points at the weekend, but Barcelona’s win over Eibar saw the five-point gap at the top of the table – maintained.
