Girona scored three goals at the Wanda Metropolitano to knock Atletico Madrid out of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday evening.
After both Getafe and Valencia got through to the Copa quarter finals on Tuesday, three games took place on Wednesday and the action started in Madrid where Girona shocked Diego Simeone’s side.
Rubi’s men knew they had to perform after being held a week previous but they saw themselves behind after Nikola Kalinic scored early on.
The visitors reacted well though and goals from Valery Fernandez and Cristhian Stuani saw them take a 2-1 lead into the hour mark.
With the pressure now back on the home side, they would take the lead through goals from Angel Correa and Antoine Griezmann.
However, one more goal would see Girona progress on the away goal rule and it came late on as Borja Garcia tapped home the winner.
Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla then played each other at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan but the former had found themselves needing a miracle to progress after a 3-1 defeat in the first leg at home.
Gorka Guruzeta did give the Basque side a win, but it was not enough to bring the tie back to level terms.
In the final game of the night, Leganes hosted Real Madrid, sitting 3-0 down to Santi Solari’s side on aggregate.
The home side did perform well and it was new signing Martin Braithwaite who opened the scoring.
His effort failed to be built on though – by the home siude and it was Madrid who progressed.
