Ronaldo heavily criticized for Instagram post after Sala incident
Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been criticized for posting an image of himself on a plane, despite the incident involving Emiliano Sala.
Several high profile footballers and former have reacted to a tweet and instagram post by the former Real Madrid man, following a day in court.
Ronaldo shared a selfie, smiling on his private jet – but the photo comes after the tragic disappearance of Emiliano Sala, who was on board a flight to England to complete his move from Nantes to Cardiff City.
Ronaldo was on his way back from Spain to Italy after accepting a two-year prison sentence for tax fraud.
Ronaldo, who first denied any wrong doing in accusations that he had defrauded the Spanish treasury between 2011 and 2014 – has now pleaded guilty and been given his terms.
Lawyers and agents representing the former Manchester United man have been heavily negotiating a deal with authorities and it is now confirmed that a two-year prison sentence plus a fine has been accepted.
The 33-year-old will not face any time behind bars because he has no previous convictions, much like Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who was involved in a similar case.
Under Spanish law, a sentence of two years or under can be served on probation providing the offender has no prior convictions.
Messi, who was fined 3.5million (€4.1million) in 2017 after being found guilty of tax fraud – skipped his prison sentence too on the same law.
Ronaldo, who now plays for Juventus, was in court on Tuesday and told reporters following the sentence: “It is now over.”
Former Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso also appeared in court but not outcome was reached over his alleged dealings.
