Atletico Madrid are looking to bring in Mexican international Hector Herrera, according to a report in Diario AS.
Herrera joined Portuguese giants Porto from Pachuca in 2013 but has six months remaining on his current deal and Atleti officials are keen to explore the potential of a free transfer.
As with a number of players this month who have contracts expiring in the summer – they are now free to discuss terms with other clubs and Atleti are keen to begin negotiations.
Diego Simeone is said to be a fond admirer of the 28-year-old and wants to add his versatality and tough tackling to the current squad, which features the likes of Thomas Partey, Koke and Rodrigo in the midfield areas.
The Argentine coach may have a battle on his hands though as Italian side Inter Milan are said to be keen on bringing the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup winner.
Having signed for Porto in 2013, Herrera has since made 223 appearances, helping them win the Primeira Liga title in 2017/2018. During that time he has featured in the Champions League and been a regular starter.
On the internationals stage, Herrera has featured 70 times for his country and played a prominent role in their over exceeding World Cup campaign last summer in Russia.
