Real Sociedad won the Basque derby 2-1 over rivals Athletic Bilbao at the Anoeta on Saturday afternoon.
It was all eyes on Basque country as in-form Athletic travelled to face La Real and it proved to be first defeat of Gaizka Garitano’s reign in charge at the former.
Garitano had guided Athletic to an impressive unbeaten run of seven games after replacing Argentine Eduardo Berizzo in December but his side struggled.
Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring for the home side in the 16th minute when he won a long ball and dribbled the ball past Iago Herrerin.
The home side continued their momentum and it was Willian Jose who scored the next goal of the game, thumping home a superb effort from outside the box.
Raul Garcia managed to pull one back for Athletic in the 82nd minute, but it proved to be too little too late for the visitors as Geronimo Rulli made a couple of good saves to keep his side in front.
The result sees La Real mpve tp seventh place, whilst Athletic are in 12th.
