VIDEO: Villarreal’s two goal lead slips against Espanyol

Javi Calleja’s return game in charge of Villarreal started so well but in the end his side failed to hold on to their two-goal lead and allowed Espanyol to snatch a point.

The Estadio de la Ceramica played host to the Sunday lunchtime fixture and all eyes were on Calleja, who returned to the Yellow Submarine just 50 days after being fired as coach.

The home side dominated the first period and it was former Arsenal man Santi Cazorla who proved providor for Vicente Iborra, who smashed home his finish to make it 1-0 before the half time break.

Espanyol did attempt to get back in the game and got better after the break but they fell further behind when Mario Hermoso gave away a penalty and allowed the brilliant Cazorla to step up and net.

Ten minutes later though and it was Espanyol who were celebrating as Daniele Bonera unfortunately put the ball into his own net and it gave the visitors momentum to get back on level terms.

Oscar Melendo was brilliant as he assisted Roberto Rosales and the full-back levelled with just ten minutes left on the referee’s watch.

The game then filtered out to a 2-2 draw with both sides seemingly settled on a point each.

Villarreal fail to move away from 19th place and will be hoping boss Calleja can turn things around, whilst Espanyol sit in 16th place and will be looking over their shoulder with the bottom placed sides all looking to move up.
