Real Madrid closed the gap between themselves and neighbours Atlético with a 3-0 win over Alaves at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Goals from Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior and Mariano Diaz saw the hosts collect all three points against a spirited Basque side.
The hosts started brightly and almost went in front through Dani Ceballos after just three minutes. Guilermo Maripan failed to clear a ball into the box with it falling the way of the former Betis midfielder but his shot was deflected out for a corner kick.
Karim Benzema was next to close in the opening ten minutes when he linked up with Ceballos before firing a shot just wide of the right hand post.
Real’s bright start continued with two more chances in the opening 20 minutes through Vinicus Junior and Sergio Reguilon.
Attacker Vinicius stole the ball off Mubarak Wakaso before shooting straight at Fernando Pacheco with Reguilon then seeing his shot from the edge of the area hit the roof of the net.
Los Blancos would break the deadlock on the half hour mark however, when Vinicius slotted the ball through Carlos Vigaray’s legs to Reguilon who squared to Benzema to tap home his tenth league goal of the season.
However, it was Alaves who started the second half brightly and they went close within a minute of the restart when Ruben Duarte volleyed wide.
Gareth Bale got in behind for Real minutes later but his powerful shot was well held by Pacheco.
Alaves captain Manu Garcia saw his shot deflect to Jonathan Calleri on 53 minutes, however, the forward could only hit the side netting.
The Alaves resurgence continued and they had a golden opportunity when Burgui tried to play in Calleri but his pass forced the forward wide and he couldn’t hit the target with his shot
Their best chance though fell the way of Jony who smashed a shot goalwards which Thibaut Courtois managed to parry to safety.
Despite the change in the game, Madrid would double their lead with ten minutes remaining when Vinicius switched the ball to Marco Asensio before the substitute found the Brazilian once more and he calmly swept it past Pacheco into the bottom corner.
Alaves should have gotten themselves a quick response when Maripan got on the end of a corner but his glancing header went just wide of the post.
Alvaro Odrizozola and Mariano Diaz had shots saved by Pacheco before the full back saw a goal disallowed for offside just before stoppage time.
Los Blancos did manage to make it 3-0 in stoppage time when Isco found Odriozola to cross for Mariano whose diving header flew into the top corner of the net to wrap up a much needed three points.
The win sees Real move to within two points of Atlético Madrid in second ahead of their derby clash next weekend, Alaves stay seventh.
