Antoine Griezmann scored the only goal of the game as Atletico Madrid beat Rayo Vallecano on Saturday afternoon.
After their slip up to arch rivals Real Madrid in the Madrid derby, Diego Simeone’s side knew that they needed to secure all three points against Rayo at the Estadio de Vallecas.
However, it would prove to be the home side who would largely dominate the opening half as Raul de Tomas tested Jan Oblak on a number of occasions.
The best chance of the opening exchanges came when De Tomas found Embarba, but the speedster saw his effort saved well by Atleti’s number one.
Atleti did improve after the break but their chances were few and far between with only Saul Niguez having a chance of real note.
But, as has been the case this season – Atleti scored from nothing when Alvaro Morata did well to find Griezmann, who scored with only his fourth touch of the game.
Simeone then opted to play defensive and hauled on Stevan Savic, whilst Rayo pushed for an equaliser.
Former Manchester United winger Bebe came close but despite having 12 shots to Atleti’s four – Rayo could do little more and the score ended in favour of the title challengers.
The victory sees Atleti move above Real Madrid into second but that could all change on Sunday when Santi Solari’s side meet Girona at the Santiago Bernabeu.
