Villarreal did their relegation battle a whole lot of good as they beat Sevilla 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The home side have been in dreaded form this season which has left them sitting 19th in the league standings prior to this game.
Aside from their poor form, the sacking and re-hiring of manager Javi Calleja – now has the former B coach in charge of keeping them in La Liga
And, they did that ambition good as they beat Sevilla at the Estadio de la Ceramica thanks to goals from Alvaro, Karl Toko-Ekambi and Alfonso Pedraza.
Sevilla arrived ready for their 41st game in all competitions this season and their tiredness was all to clear to see as Alvaro took full advantage in the 20th minute following a Santi Cazorla assist.
Pablo Machin’s visitors did have chances but having failed to make them count – Ekambi linked with strike partner Carlos Bacca, before netting his side’s second just moments before the half time break.
Whilst Villarreal knew that a win would not see them out of the bottom three, they seemed determined to use the second half as a stepping point to potentially build on and they got a further reward when Pedraza got himself a well deserved goal to match his performance.
The result leaves Sevilla having been title contenders to now sitting in fourth place, eight points off Real Madrid in third.
