Barcelona’s technical secretary Eric Abidal will make a final decision on the potential signing of Lyon defender Ferland Mendy this week, according to reports.
Following the departure of Lucas Digne to Everton last summer, the Catalan side have very few options to relieve Jordi Alba of a break at left-back and of late – that has been telling, given that Nelson Semedo has been forced to play their during an injury for the Spanish international.
Interest in Mendy has been rife since the turn of the year, citing a need to give Alba substantial rest periods during the season and balance out the defensive options.
Monday’s Catalan newspaper Sport claims that Barca have held talks with Lyon and Mendy’s representatives over a summer move, but Abidal will assess whether the move is both economically viable and the right move on the pitch.
Barca face Lyon in the Champions League on Tuesday in France and Abidal is said to have arranged meetings with officials to discuss the move in extent.
Mendy signed a five-year deal last summer with the Ligue 1 side and would not be available for a cheap price, making Abidal’s decision key in the move.
Alba, who has been in superb form this season – is currently negotiating a new deal at the Camp Nou.
