Atletico Madrid registered a clinical 2-0 win in the first leg of an all-important round of 16 tie in Madrid on Wednesday.
The Madrid based side made their presence felt when it mattered the most, scoring two goals in the second half of an exciting clash.
Uruguay based centre backs Jose Giminez and Diego Godin converted in an inch perfect fashion off the slightest of opportunities, placing a fair case for their attacking prowess especially under pressure.
At the same time, the night certainly had a controversial flavour to it with VAR, the footballing community’s latest punching bag coming under intense scrutiny.
The hosts lately certainly seemed hard done by following the decision to hand a free kick instead of a penalty in the first half following a VAR referral. However, they had further cause to rue the introduction of the VAR with an early second half goal by substitute Alvaro Morata off a fine header ruled out as well.
However, the tie is certainly not done and dusted despite the two goal advantage held by the Spanish giants. While striker Diego Costa and midfielder Thomas are ruled out of the second leg after accumulating an excess of yellow cards, the Turin based giants will enjoy a virtually full strength side.
Juventus have been known to dominate opponents at home, and are more than capable of overturning the two goal deficit at home.
There will be all to play for when the two sides face off on March 13 in the second leg of a do or die clash.
