Celta Vigo held on for a point against Alaves on Saturday as they kept themselves just above the relegation places.
The Galician side have struggled throughout this term so far and after some poor results of late – they were predicted by many to lose against Alaves, who have been pushing for a European place.
But, the visitors did have the best chance of the opening half as Brais Mendez found space in the box and he rose to try an audacious overhead kick, which narrowly went wide of the Alaves goal.
Alaves did have a good chance just before the break when Guillermo Maripan came close but the centre back could not direct his head on target.
The second half saw Celta narrow it just on possession, but it was the hosts who had the best chances as Jony tried from a free-kick, which was saved well by Sergio Alvarez.
The result sees Celta stay clear of the bottom three, however, Villarreal do have a game in hand and can go above them, whilst, Alaves remain sixth – level on points with Sevilla, who were beaten by Barcelona earlier in the day.
Elsewhere, on Saturday evening, Athletic Bilbao beat Eibar 1-0 to continue their recent turn around in form.
