Takashi Inui scored the winner for Alaves as they kept their Champions League hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Villarreal.
If you had predicted where these two sides could be come this time of the season before it had started – you would not be silly in predicting the hosts to be sat near the Champions League places and Alaves to be around the mid-table mark.
But, that has not been the case and Villarreal continue to struggle in finding consistency, whilst Alaves are crossing their fingers on an incredible top four finish.
Guillermo Maripan opened the scoring for the visitors just moments after the half time break, but his goal was cancelled out just ten minutes later when Santi Cazorla scored from the penalty spot.
The home side did have the lions share of possession but the likes of Carlos Bacca and Karl Toko Ekambi failed to take their chances, which in truth – were few and far between.
With Villarreal struggling to find a winner, it was over to Takashi Inui, signed on loan from Real Betis in January to take the headlines.
The Japanese midfielder played on the left wing for Aberlardo’s side and he proved a thorn in Villarreal’s defence throughout, finally getting on the scoresheet and sealing the win in the 77th minute.
Three points for Alaves ensures they remain in fourth places, whilst Villarreal remain 18th place.
