Alvaro Morata scored a double to help Atletico Madrid beat Real Sociedad on Saturday evening.
Diego Simeone’s side knew that they had to beat La Real to keep pressure on league leaders Barcelona, who beat Real Madrid on Saturday and they produced a battling display to beat the Basque hosts.
Mikel Oyarzabal almost put the home side in front within the opening ten minutes but he found Jan Oblak in superb form to keep the scores level.
La Real continued to cause problems for the visitors, but that seemed to change when Willian Jose was forced off through injury.
Atleti then began to create and they took the lead after 30 minutes when Thomas Lerma crossed in and Diego Godin’s flick on was put in the back of the net by Morata.
And, the former Chelsea striker was on hand three minutes later when Koke supplied him with a delightful cross to head home.
The second half saw Atleti dominate and defend well when Sociedad attacked on the break. The real only talking point from the second half from then on was the second booking for Koke, who was given his marching orders late on.
Atleti now reduced the gap to seven points between themselves and Barcelona, whilst Sociedad remain mid-table.
