Pepe Mel returned to football on Monday as coach of Las Palmas until the end of the season as Paco Herrera was dismissed by the Islanders.
The 56 year old Madrid coach will take charge for the final 14 games of the season and attempt to improve their current league position of 11th, sitting six points off the promotion play-off places.
Mel who has previous experience in getting teams promoted to La Liga was presented this afternoon at the Gran Canaria Stadium.
For his part, former coach Paco Herrera has stated after his dismissal that he will always be “grateful” to the club for having trusted him for the promotion project and that he has received the news of his dismissal with “understanding”.
Herrera has ruled out a farewell press conference and has told the club’s website that he wanted to express his gratitude to the coaching staff and footballers he also highlighted the “commitment and professionalism” of everyone at the club.
The Barcelona born coach has also taken the opportunity to “wish the team the best in the remainder of the season” and continues to think that “the team can reach the ‘playoffs’, and that they had been “unlucky” in certain matches.
The Islanders face Deportivo La Coruna this coming Sunday.
