Things are not going well for Quique Setien at Real Betis these days, and after a month with bad results, some Betis supporters want the Spanish coach fired.
A couple of weeks ago things were looking good for Betis. A spot in the semifinal in Copa Del Rey and a good draw versus Rennes in the Europa League. However, Betis were surprisingly knocked out by Rennes, and last week, they lost to Valencia at the Mestalla, which meant they missed the opportunity to play a Copa del Rey final at home at Benito Villamarin.
This Sunday, the Verdiblancos played an important home game against Getafe in the battle for the 4th place in La Liga.
Betis lost the game 2-1 and afterwards, a big part of the stadium whistled and booed towards Setien. The rumours are, that some supporters have had enough of the aimless passing tactics, without creating chances, which really has been the big problem for Setien this season.
In desperate need of a new striker
The way I see it, a lot of teams have been well prepared for the Betis style of play, and Setien is yet to find a plan B.
In this sense, Setien is pretty similar to a guy like Paco Jemez. Both managers definitely could use to widen their horizons in terms of using different formations and be more realistic with what their players are capable of.
Betis has one of the best midfielders in the league, with William Carvalho, Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Canales as the main players, but in attack they need one or two proven goal-getters.
Sergio Leon and Loren Moron are good players, but especially Leon was better fitted for a team like Osasuna, that did not operate in the same tight spaces as Betis does.
Loren is good but a bit clumsy, and his past as a Betis B-player maybe gives him a longer leash than many others.
Right now Canales is their topscorer in the league, with just 6 goals in total. If you compare that to a team like Getafe, were both Jaime Mata and Jorge Molina has scored more than 10 goals each just shows what Betis are lacking this season.
Setien needs more time
I know that Setien, has used a lot of money on players that fit his system but he still needs a couple more, to show what he is really capable of. Just think if Betis could play as they did in the 4-3 victory at Camp Nou more often?
Setien has already been game changer in terms of how people look at Betis now compared to just some years ago, so of course, he should have at least until summer. Yes, the last month has been terrible for the club in terms of results, but the disappointment right now, just shows how big expectations Setien has given the club and the fans. However, if Betis should fire the Spaniard, I am pretty sure a lot of Barcelona supporters would love to see Setien in charge of Blaugrana, but with Ernesto Valverde’s contract extension that will not happen anytime soon.
