Dani Carvajal has discussed his side’s defeat to Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, saying their season is over.
Heading into this tie, Madrid had lost back-to-back defeats to Barcelona but they held the advantage over Ajax having won the first leg 2-1 in Amsterdam.
The game started in frantic style and slightly against the run of play – the visitors broke the deadlock to silence the Santiago Bernabeu through Hakim Ziyech.
10 minutes later and things would go from bad to worse for Madrid as they allowed Ajax to score again and take the lead in the tie, this time through the impressive David Neres, who expertly chipped the ball over Thibaut Courtois.
Former Southampton man Dusan Tadic would then get in on the act as everyone inside the Bernabeu looked shocked and stunned, including those travelling Ajax fans.
Madrid now had to do the unthinkable and their was some hope when Marco Asensio struck with twenty minutes remaining.
But, a superb free-kick from Lasse Schone beat Courtois at his far post and the game was put to bed by the visitors.
Nacho was sent off in stoppage time as Madrid attempted to spring a comeback but it was too little too late and the game ended, thus ending Madrid’s three year reign as European champions.
“We have lost everything this week, and it all came at home,” Carvajal told Movistar after the game.
“Ajax were better than we were and they deserved this victory, we did not play well after losing two consecutive home defeats against Barcelona which is not easy.
“We made two mistakes early and were two goals down and chasing the game, so when the third goal went in that killed us.
“We will keep fighting and keep being professional, but our season is over and we cannot hide the fact this has been rubbish for us, and right now I cannot explain it.”
