Heading into Friday night’s La Liga clash between Athletic Bilbao and Espanyol, it is the home side who have the edge at the San Mames.
Both sides have suffered inconsistent form this term with the visitors having enjoyed a superb start to the season, whilst Athletic struggled – but recent results have improved, allowing both sides to look at a potential European place.
A win for either at San Mames on Friday evening could see them move to 8th place and put pressure on the likes of Real Betis, Valencia and Sevilla.
Espanyol are in slightly better form, having not lost in their last five games, which include two wins, whilst Athletic have lost two in their last five, but have also won two.
Given the tightness of La Liga this season, both side’s will treat this game as a must-win, hoping they can steer away from the relegation battlers with Villarreal sitting on 23 points.
Athletic have lost their last two league games to Espanyol by a scoreline of 1-0 on both occasions.
Athletic are unbeaten in their last six games at home under Garitano, winning four and drawing twice.
In those six games, the Basque club have kept five clean sheets with four of those in their last four games, equalling a record from 1999.
The visitors are unbeaten in their last five games after losing their previous three games.
Athletic have the upper hand given that they are at home but Espanyol’s recent form has them looking up the table once more. Whilst we do predict that Athletic will be the most likely to win this one, we are putting a 1-1 down.
