Athletic Bilbao and Espanyol shared a point each on Friday night as Raul Garcia cancelled out Facundo Ferrerya’s early goal.
These two sides sat exactly level in the La Liga standings before kick off and it would have put a brave betting man to pick a winner from this one.
Athletic were deemed slight favourites however, given the San Mames atmosphere and their form at home of late but it was a frantic start that allowed the visitors to take the lead.
Ferreyra was somewhat of a surprise starter but he made his presence felt after finishing off a move which involved Chinese sensation Wu Lei.
Espanyol held on to their lead through to half time, despite the Basque hosts dominated in terms of possession.
The lively Inaki Williams was forced off at half time for striker Kenan Kodro and it looked during the second period – that Espanyol’s defensive resiliance was going to earn them a victory.
However, Ibai Gomez arrived off the substitutes bench to put in a sublime cross for Raul Garcia, who struck with ten minutes of normal time left to play.
The draw means that Espanyol remain 11th, just above Athletic, who are in 12th place.
