Saul Niguez scored the only goal of the game as Atletico Madrid beat Leganes 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Wanda Metropolitano.
Atleti knew that a win would be all they could afford as they looked to pressure on league leaders Barcelona, who face Rayo Vallecano later on Saturday evening.
But, they faced a resilient Leganes side, who have been producting some really good results of late and the visitors caused Atleti problems during the first half.
Martin Braithwaite has been revelation since his January loan move from English side Middlesbrough and he continued that form, causing the Atleti backline cause for concern.
Antoine Griezmann was rather subdued in the opening 45 minutes and he was replaced by Thomas Lemar at the break and the Frenchman began to turn the screw for the home side.
Saul Niguez was also hauled on by Diego Simeone and it was the young Spanish midfielder who broke the deadlock just five minutes later when he hammered home a rebound from Andriy Lunin, who saved his initial penalty kick.
Lemar then came close on the hour mark as his free kick went narrowly wide but it mattered not as Atleti held on for all three points and reduced the gap to four points at the top of the table.
