Mundo Deportivo have claimed that a deal for Matthijs De Ligt to join Barcelona is close, however, the central defender has discussed a potential move to Liverpool.
The La Liga leaders agreed a deal for Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong in January and they are now actively attempting to bring his close friend and team-mate De Ligt to the Camp Nou this coming summer.
De Ligt has emerged as one of world football’s top talents after some fledging displays for Ajax in Eredivisie and in Europe, where he captainted the side to a win over Real Madrid, which knocked out the European champions.
Mundo Deportivo now claim that a deal ‘is in the table’, but those claims seem to have been countered by De Ligt, who has discussed a linl to Liverpool.
De Ligt is reported to have told Dutch press over the weekend: “They are a great side, and Van Dijk is there, and I learn a lot from playing with him for the national team.”
And, those comments have now got English media heavily linking him with a move to Anfield.
Time will tell who can move faster to make the move happen between now and the summer, but given Barcelona’s healthy friendship and relationship with the Dutch giants – they seem more likely to seal the deal.
His potential arrival would see the likes of Jeison Murillo and Thomas Vermaelen move on, whilst Gerard Pique, who has played every minute of the La Liga season – could be afforded a rest.
