Lionel Messi was in typically superb form as he guided Barcelona through to the Champions League quarter-finals, beating Lyon 5-1 at Camp Nou.
Two weeks ago Barcelona travelled to France for the first leg of this tie and failed to score, having a remarkable 21 shots on Lyon’s goal.
The visitors arrived confident knowing that a single goal would give them an advantage but they were undone by a wonderful performance from Messi, who scored two and created two.
The Argentine’s first goal came from the penalty spot after Luis Suarez had been hauled down by Jason Denayer and he would then combine with Suarez once more to play in Philippe Coutinho, who walked the ball over the line for Barca’s second.
Barca then kept knocking on the door for a third, but it was Lyon who scored next when Lucas Tousart half volleyed the ball past Marc Andre ter Stegen.
Messi was not finished though as he then ran at the heart of the Lyon defence, turning Denayer and Marcelo inside out, before finishing and sealing Barca’s route to the next round.
Messi would then turn provider as he played in Gerard Pique, who tapped home following one of his burstful runs from the back.
The result and performance from Barca was rounded off when Ousmane Dembele finished well, following a superb pass from Messi once more.
Following the game, Messi said: “City and Juventus are both very good and Ajax are a great young side.
“But whoever we get it will be difficult, and we must prepare for the hardest possible test in the coming weeks.”
