Athletic Bilbao vs Atletico Madrid: Visitors must make a statement after European exit

Atletico Madrid will face Athletic Bilbao on Saturday afternoon looking to bounce back after their Champions League exit in midweek.

Having held such an advantageous lead over Juventus in the last-16 tie, Diego Simeone’s men travelled to Italy and were undone by former Real Madrid man Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored a hat-trick to send the Spanish side home, exiting the competition.

With no Copa del Rey in contention, Simeone will now have to very much focus his side on chasing down league leaders Barcelona for the La Liga title and that must start at home to an improving and Europe chasing Athletic Bilbao.

The Basque side have improved of late, having lost just once in their last five games and they arrive looking to put the pressure on the teams just above them in the league table.

Team News

For the home side, Inigo Martinez is suspended for the home side, which should see Unai Nunez come in at central defence, whilst Mikel San Jose is expected to return alongside Dani Garcia in midfield.

The visitors will have a problem in the full-back areas as Lucas Hernandez, Filipe Luis and Santiago Arias are all struggling, whilst Juanfran’s performance against Juventus has left Simeone with a headache.
