Gareth Bale and Isco both scored as Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in what was Zinedine Zidane’s first game back in charge.
When Madrid were eliminated from the Copa del Rey, La Liga title race and Champions League in the space of ten days – the future of the club seemed uncertain, albeit until Zidane was announced to return and save them from what has been a rather poor season.
The French tactician bounced back with a win, making several changes to the side that started against Barcelona twice and Ajax in those exits.
Experienced Marcelo returned to the starting eleven, whilst Bale and Isco were given chance to shine too. Keylor Navas was also in for Thibaut Courtois, who has had a drastic debut season.
In truth, Celta made Madrid work for the win and chances did fall for Sofiane Boufal during the first half.
But, the home side proved dominant in the second period as Isco opened the scoring, much to the delight of the Santiago Bernabeu.
His goal just after the hour mark calmed a lot of nerves and Bale began to express himself even more, scoring his side’s second in the 77th minute.
The win for Madrid sees them go three points off second placed Atletico Madrid, who are in action against Athletic Bilbao later on Saturday evening.
