Atletico Madrid followed up their European exit in midweek with a defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday afternoon.
Having exited the Champions League to Juventus, Diego Simeone’s side had to bounce back at the San Mames against Athletic but the Basque hosts gave them a tough game, which saw goals from Inaki Williams and Raul Garcia earn them all three points.
Ibai Gomez was in superb form from the offset and he almost broke the deadlock had it not been for Jan Oblak’s excellent goalkeeping in the Atleti goal.
For the visitors, the strike force of Antoine Griezmann, Diego Costa and Alvaro Morata was failing to gel and cause the home side any problems.
With the game looking set on being a draw, Athletic chose to alter their play a little and began to give Inaki Williams license to roam and the speedy forward opened the scoring, following poor defensive work from Jose Gimenez.
Atleti did have a chance to level the scoring through Morata but his effort at the back post failed to hit the target and that miss was compounded for Simeone’s side, who allowed Kenan Kodro time to score with five minutes remaining on the clock.
The defeat for Atleti means they could go ten points behind league leaders Barcelona, if they beat Real Betis on Sunday, whilst Athletic continue to move up the table.
