Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr has claimed that Barcelona offered him more money than Real Madrid.
The Brazilian forward has been one of Los Blancos’ better performers this season, forcing his way into the starting eleven over the likes of Isco and Gareth Bale.
Joining Madrid in May 2017 from Brazilian side Flamengo, the 18-year-old was subject to interest from a number of top European clubs and he has now claimed that Barca offered him a deal.
“My father never told me of interest until Barcelona and Real Madrid,” he told Cadena SER.
“Then we visited both clubs and liked them both.
“Barcelona wanted to pay more, but we wanted the best project and Marcelo and Casemiro spoke to me and helped me decide.”
Barca opted to bring in Ousmane Dembele instead of Vinicius at the time and the Frenchman’s form has vastly improved, following heavy criticism in his first season at the Camp Nou.
Vinicius Jr is currently nursing an injury which has seen him miss the last few games and in particular – the win over Celta Vigo last weekend which was Zinedine Zidane’s first game back in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The win saw Bale bounce back into form, scoring, whilst Isco was also able to get on the scoresheet and it will now be interesting to see what role Vinicius plays under Zidane upon his return to fitness.
Madrid face Huesca following the international break, whilst they have no Champions League or Copa del Rey to play for, following exits to Ajax and Barcelona, respectively.
