Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez will join Bayern Munich this summer, it has been confirmed.
Diego Simeone’s Atleti are heading for a big change this summer which will see a number of experienced first team players leave the club in the shape of Diego Godin and Juanfran, and it has now been confirmed that Hernandez will also depart.
Rumours have been rife since before the mid-season winter break over Bayern’s interest in Hernandez and the Bavarian side have now chosen to release the news of their agreed deal.
A statement on Wednesday morning said that the German champions will pay €80m for the defender and sign him to a five-year deal which will begin on July 1.
“Today is a very important day in my football career,” Hernandez told his new club’s official website.
“Bayern Munich are one of the best clubs in Europe and the world. I’m proud to be able to fight for every trophy with Bayern in the future.
“I’d like to thank Atletico, their management, the Coaches, my teammates and the fans for a wonderful 12 years.
“Atletico will always be a part of me, but now I’m happy that I’ll be taking my next step at Bayern.”
23-year-old Hernandez only signed a new deal with Atleti last June but an offer form those at the Allianz Arena is said to have been to tempting.
Having made his Atleti debut in December 2015, Hernandez helped Atleti win the Europa League and European Super Cup during his 110 appearances, whilst he was part of France’s World Cup winning side in Russia last summer.
Finally, Hernandez, who has struggled for regular football this season due to a knee problem – will undergo surgery upon his arrival at the club.
