Getafe lost 2-0 to Leganes in a shock result that halted their Champions League hopes on Saturday afternoon.
The home side packed out the Coliseum Alfonso Perez as their fans hoped to see another performance which would give them advantage in the race for Champions League qualification, however, Leganes were excellent as they produced arguably their best performance of the season.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side have struggled for consistency this season but they stood firm as the likes of Jaime Mata and Jorge Molina looked to continue their goalscoring form for the home side.
Their surprising lack of goal threat though saw Getafe go behind just after the half time mark when Michael Santos struck following good work from left back Jonathan Silva.
As much as Jose Bordalas’ side pushed for a leveller, they failed to get one and allowed the away side to grab a second as Juanfran scored with ten minutes remaining on the clock.
The win meant the away side moved up to 11th in the La Liga standings, whilst Getafe did stay in fourth place but could not extend their two point gap over Alaves, who face Atletico Madrid on Saturday evening.
Elsewhere, Friday night saw Athletic Bilbao beat Girona 2-1, whilst Barcelona beat Espanyol 2-0 on Saturday.
