Atletico Madrid beat Alaves 4-0 on Saturday evening to bring the gap back down to ten at the top of the La Liga table.
Diego Simeone’s side knew coming into this game that Barcelona had stretched their lead at the top to 13 points after beating Espanyol earlier in the day and they produced a good performance to ensure that lead did not extend through to the next round.
Alaves had been expected to be a tough opponent for Atleti, given their position in the league and their battle with Getafe for the fourth Champions League place at present, but the home side were lacklustre.
Saul Niguez has been in typically good form for the most part this season and he struck the opening goal after just five minutes and it soon became 2-0 when Diego Costa got himself on the scoresheet.
Alaves then knew they had to steady proceedings and they did make the game a largely even affair but any chance of a comeback seemed unliekly and even more so when Alvaro Morata netted to make it 3-0 just after half time.
The win was rounded off with Thomas Partey get himself a well deserved goal, leaving Atleti ten points behind Barca.
