Inaki Williams has said he is happy with Athletic Bilbao’s current form after they beat Girona 2-1 on Friday evening.
Williams nets in win over Girona
Before kick off, these two sides were fairly even, sitting around the midtable mark in La Liga but it proved to be a good night for the visitors as they secured an impressive win to give their European hopes a boost.
The opening goal of the came rather against the run of play as Williams and Oscar De Marcos both tested home keeper and former Athletic stopper Gorka Iraizoz during the opening twenty minutes.
Cristhian Stuani was the man celebrating as he found the back of the net after good work from left back Raul Garcia.
The game then was fairly even but chances fell few and far between as the hosts failed to build on their 1-0 lead and that was soon cancelled out by the lively Williams.
The Basque striker was on hand to bring his side level thanks to good work by Yuri Berchiche and it was just five minutes later than flipped the game right on its head as Athletic went ahead.
This time Williams turned providor as he found Raul Garcia, who put the ball into the back of the net past Iraizoz and secured all three points.
What did Williams have to say?
“We are in a good dynamic. The team is OK and we can fight for great things,” he told reporters. “I hope to contribute to the team with my game and to get the three points.
“We have to be optimistic. We have to give everything. Wednesday is going to be hard because Levante needs to win.
“We know they’re going out for it. But we have the support of our supporters and all together we will get the three points. I’m enjoying myself finally. I’m scoring goals again. The forwards have spells and when you don’t score you’re pissed. It’s true that I’d like to score more goals, but I’m going to keep improving based on my work.
“The team has taken a step forward. We have to be aware that it’s hard to get into Europe but it’s up to us.”
