Atletico Madrid kept the pressure on Barcelona with a 2-0 win over Girona on Tuesday evening.
Diego Simeone’s side knew that they had to beat visiting Girona to keep up league leaders Barca, who faced Villarreal later in the evening.
Sitting ten points off their main title rivals, Atleti pushed for the opening goal but found the Girona back-line in good form, whilst visiting keeper Gorka Iraizoz was also causing the likes of Antoine Griezmann a problem.
After all of their hard work though, Atleti made the breakthrough with 15 minutes remaining on the clock when Diego Godin headed in from a Griezmann cross.
The goal had initially been reviewed by VAR, who adjudged Griezmann to be onside in the build up.
With the game heading for a 1-0 scoreline, Griezmann was involved once more as he broke free and chipped the ball into the back of the net over Iraizoz.
The scoreline in truth – seemed harsh on the visitors who were left rueing a number of chances for reserve striker Seydou Doumbia, who replaced Cristhian Stuani in the starting line up through injury.
The win put Atleti within seven points of Barca, but the Catalan side still had lowly Villarreal to face on Tuesday evening.
