Espanyol held fourth placed Getafe to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening at the RCDE Stadium.
The visitors arrived in Catalonia knowing that the weekend defeat to Leganes had to be forgotten about as their quest for a Champions League place gains pace.
Jose Bordalas’ side have been in superb form and command a two point lead over fifth placed Alaves but they found themselves on the back foot early on as the likes of Borja Iglesias and young Chinese sensation Wu Lei caused them all sorts of problems.
With the scoreline settled at 0-0 for the break, Espanyol striker Iglesias proved vital in scoring the first goal of the game, just moments before the hour mark.
Getafe then seemed to change their style of play and they got a well deserved leveller on the 72nd minute mark as Angel Rodriguez struck.
The draw which proved to be a fiesty affair with seven bookings in total – leaves Espanyol mid-table, whilst Getafe will be hoping Alaves lose this week to hold on to that two point gap.
Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid beat Girona 2-0 thanks to goals from Diego Godin and Antoine Griezmann, whilst Barcelona and Villarreal were in the other match on Tuesday evening.
