Athletic Bilbao were forced to battle for all three points on Sunday against a relegation fighting Rayo Vallecano.
Rewind before the winter break and these two sides would have been fighting it out in the bottom three but the home side’s form of late has been excellent and as such – has seen them move up the table to seventh position.
Inaki Williams’ performances have been a key reason for their improvement and it was no surprise when he opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute.
Alex Moreno was not going to see Rayo go down without a fight though as he struck on 45 minutes to put his side back into the game.
Williams was not finished however, as he struck to put the home side back in front on the 50th minute mark.
The visitors then suffered a further setback when Luis Advincula was sent off just seven minutes later and they would fall further behind to the Basque’s when Raul Garcia struck with twenty minutes remaining on the clock.
A late Raul de Tomas goal did shake the nerves of the home side in the final ten minutes but Gaizka Garitano’s side held on for three points.
