Barcelona vs Getafe: What next for Valverde’s lacklustre La Liga champions?

Barcelona vs Getafe: What next for Valverde’s lacklustre La Liga champions?

Barcelona meet Getafe on Sunday evening looking to put to bed their embarassing Champions League defeat to Liverpool in midweek.

It was a shock seen all around the world as Ernesto Valverde’s side let slip a 3-0 first leg lead to Liverpool on Tuesday evening, seeing their quest for European glory this season – come to an abrupt end.

A backlash has since followed the result with players such as Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and even, Leo Messi.

With the league title wrapped up, Valverde now has a decision to make on the final two league games on whether he plays his bigger stars or he continues to rotate and keep the young players and string players – gaining minutes.

Whatever the under-pressure coach chooses to do will come up against a Getafe side who have been excellent this season and are sitting three points clear in the Champions League places.

A win over the Catalan hosts would see Jose Bordalas’ side all-but qualify for Europe’s elite competition.

Team News

For the home side, Luis Suarez is unavailable as he will undergo surgery on his knee problem, whilst Ivan Rakitic and Sergio Busquets are both back after league suspension.

Nelson Semedo are expected to double up on the right hand side after another injury to French World Cup winner Ousmane Dembele.

Getafe arrive at the Camp Nou with Bruno Gonzalez and Jaime Mata suspended, whilst Ignasi Miquel is expected to return to centre-back.

Predicted XI’s

Barca: Ter Stegen, Semedo, Pique, Umtiti, Alba, Busquets, Arthur, Rakitic, Messi, Roberto, Coutinho

Getafe: Soria, Suarez, Miquel, Djene, Cabrera, Foulquier, Olivera, Maksimovic, Arambarri, Molina, Rodriguez

What do we predict?

Let’s go for a Getafe win and why not? Barca were awful against Liverpool and we expect similar against Jose Bordalas’ side. The season is now over, albeit a Copa del Rey final against Valencia, which they are favourites to win. Getafe will be on the prowl for three points which could give them an incredible Champions League qualification.
