Athletic Bilbao missed a late penalty to see them be held to a point by Mallorca on Friday evening at Son Moix.
The Basque visitors have started the season in excellent fashion, beating Barcelona on the opening day of the season and they knew that a victory over the Islanders would see thme sit top of the La Liga table going into the weekend’s fixtures.
Mallorca, who had lost their previous three league games with Athletic over the years, started the game well and squandered some good chances.
Veteran winger Salva Sevilla had arguably the best chance for the home side and that came late on in the 76th minute, but he could be excused after Abdon missed a penalty for the home side, sending his effort wide.
The Son Moix faithful have now failed to see their side score in their last three league games and that could be a problem as they seek to remain in the top flight.
They did get some good luck late on however, when Aritz Aduriz looked to take advantage of a VAR decision to award a penalty for handball but the veteran Spanish striker failed to find the back of the net, being denied by home keeper Manolo Reina.
Athletic, now sit on eight points from four matches, whilst Mallorca sit 14th with four points.
