Getafe and Sevilla picked up wins in the Europa League on Thursday, whilst Espanyol came from behind to draw with Ferencvaros.
Many eyebrows would have been raised when they saw Getafe in Europe but Jose Bordelas’ side warranted a place in the competition after a superb domestic campaign last term and their opening day performance against Turkish side Trabzonspor saw them get a win.
Angel Rodriguez was a major part of their success last season and his excellent goalscoring form continued as he opened the scoring on the 18th minute mark.
The visitors struggled to create any clear cut chances and the win meant the Spanish side sat top of Group C with Swiss side FC Basel.
Espanyol opened their campaign at home with a visit from Ferencvaros and they almost lost after Javi Lopez put the ball into his own net on 10 minutes.
21 efforts on goal followed from the home side and they were rewarded when Matias Vargas scored on the hour mark.
Two former Champions League sides would meet at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium in Azerbaijan as FC Qarabag hosted a top of La Liga Sevilla side.
The visitors have been in excellent form and they secured a 3-0 win with goals coming from Javier Hernandez, Munir El Haddadi and Oliver Torres.
