Goals from Saul Niguez and Alvaro Morata secured a 2-0 win for Atletico Madrid over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday evening at Wanda Metropolitano.
With El Clasico postponed until December, league leaders Barcelona gave Diego Simeone’s side the chance to join them level on points.
And, a solid performance for the home side saw them do just that as held off Athletic Bilbao.
In truth, the 2-0 win looked comfortable on paper but it was far from it at times as the Basque visitors tested Jan Oblak on numerous occasions.
Atleti’s number one was in excellent form however and his performance gave Simeone’s side the morale they needed to secure the win.
Saul Niguez opened the scoring after Angel Correa played him in and he finished nicely.
The second period saw Atleti control the game with less chances being given to the visitors and the home side made it 2-0 through Alvaro Morata.
The former Chelsea man was found by Correa before he tapped home.
Earlier on Saturday, Martin Braithwaite scores the only goal of the game as Leganes secured a slender 1-0 win over Mallorca.
The third match of Saturday saw Real Valladolid gain a home win over Eibar, who continue to struggle on the road.
Goals from Sergi Guardiola and Mohammed Salisu gave the hosts all three points.
