Sergio Busquets has leaped to the defence of his Barcelona team-mate Gerard Pique after he scored an unfortunate own goal on Sunday evening against Real Madrid.
Countless critique on social media has seen central defender Pique blamed for Barca’s 3-1 first leg defeat to Real Madrid in the last few days.
The Spanish international deflected a cross from Brazilian full-back Marcelo past Marc Andre ter-Stegen to hand Madrid a first of three goals on the night at Camp Nou.
Whilst some have claimed Pique’s error was unfortunate, others via social media, including the club’s general manager Pep Segura have said it was ‘decisive and changed the match’.
Busquets, however, has jumped to defend his team-mate, saying Segura should not be pointing the blame at one player.
“You don’t lose because of one play. (This is) not the way to express yourself and even less so from inside the club, singling out a player.”
The defensive midfielder then chose to discuss new arrivals at the Camp Nou after Barca agreed a 40m euro deal to sign Paulinho from Guangzhou Evergrande.
“There’s only one Neymar. We have to look forwards,” said Busquets when asked about the Brazilian’s move to Paris Saint Germain.
“With Neymar leaving we need, above all, attacking players.
“We have a good team, we’re capable of having a great season, that’s what we’re focusing on. We want to convince the fans but the off-the-field situation is not up to me. I hope a lot of signings come and that they are of the highest quality.”
The second leg of the Spanish Supercopa takes place on Wednesday evening at 10pm GMT and sees Barca having to overturn a 3-1 defeat at Santiago Bernabeu.
