A foreboding Real Madrid team defeated Barcelona 2-0 at the Bernabeu in a very comfortable performance for Los Blancos.
After an impressive cameo at the Nou Camp, Asensio was named as a starter, along with Lucas Vazquez, replacing suspended Ronaldo and Bale in the squad. The teams were greeted with a more hostile performance than the one at the Camp Nou and Madrid pressed for a goal early on.
They found their advantage in spectacular fashion, Asensio scoring a stunning goal from about 25 yards. Madrid continued to dominate with Barcelona hardly seeing the ball until the 15th or 20th minute.
Messi shot against the post was the only highlight for the Catalans. Madrid continued to probe the Catalan’ss defence and eventually found a second goal in the form of Karim Benzema, who volleyed home from close range, wrapping up the game.
The second half was much improved from Valverde side and they had a few chances, most notably Suarez heading the ball against the post with an empty goal at his mercy. Zidane gave debuts for both Dani Ceballos and Theo Hernandez which reinvigorated Real Madrid who went looking for a third goal in the last few mintutes.
It is the first clean sheet Real Madrid have kept against Barcelona in 24 meetings and their 10th Supercup title. As for Valverde, he joins a list of just three coaches to lose their first two games as Barcelona manager and a humbling 5-1 aggregate defeat for the Blaugrana.
