The rise of Mallorca’s Golden Child: Marco Asensio

Mallorca is the largest Island out of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean. A relaxing holiday destination and the only football side is Real Mallorca who play in the Segunda division a club who were once beating Spanish giants to now struggling to stay afloat in the second tier.

However a big star on the Island may just have discovered his name Marco Asensio after two superb performances against Los Blanco’s biggest rivals FC Barcelona in the Supercopa the 21 year old has everybody talking about just how good the boy really can be.

Asensio was once on the books of Real Mallorca but it could have been a very different story as Barcelona were the first club that came calling making a bid in 2014 but it was turned down by Mallorca however it has been said that the youngster always had Real Madrid in his heart so when they came calling it was an easy choice to leave to join the worlds biggest club.

Asensio has also scored in the Uefa Champions League final not bad for a 21 year old stepping off the bench to score Real Madrids fourth in a 4-1 victory over Juventus in Cardiff. With his style of play as an attacking midfielder with his range of movement this also helps Cristiano Ronaldo to create more space as he is evolving into due to his age as a striker.

It hasn’t always been easy for Marco however as at the age of 15 he lost his mother after her battle with cancer that caused difficulties in his footballing career and he has also suffered with growth deficiencies in his knees they only healed in his teens.

Asensio’s family have a good pedigree of football in their background as his father Gilberto was an attacking midfielder who played for second division club Barkalddo the position that of course his son Marco plays so he really is following in his fathers footsteps.

His international career has also taken off well as he scored a hat-trick on his debut in the European Under 21 championships in a 5-0 route of Macedonia as his side finished runners up in the tournament after losing the final to Germany.

In my opinion after the Legacy’s of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi I believe that Asensio will become the first Balondo’r winner after those two if he keeps his feet on the ground and continues to show the promising signs he is currently.

His honour’s currently include a La Liga title, Champions League,Uefa Super cup,Spanish Super cup and a Spain under 19 European championship. He was also included in the team of the tournament from this summers U21 Euros and picked up the Silver Boot .

He may only be at the start of his Real Madrid career but he has already proven that there is plenty to look forward to when life after Cristiano Ronaldo begins.
