Sevilla 2-2 Istanbul Basaksehir: Hosts earn Champions League spot

Sevilla secured their place in the group stages of the Champions League after a nervy 2-2 draw with Istanbul Basaksehir at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

The visitors took the lead through Eljero Elia but second half goals from Sergio Escudero and Wissam Ben Yedder looked to have clinched the tie for Sevilla. Edin Visca levelled the tie on the night to set up a grand stand finish but the Turkish side were unable to get the goal they needed to knock the Andalusians out on away goals.

Sevilla started well and almost went ahead inside two minutes when Ever Banega played Joaquin Correa through one on one with the goalkeeper but Volkan Babacan got off his line quickly to make the block.

Seconds later Sevilla went close again when Ben Yedder was played in on the right side of the penalty box but his powerful strike went across the goalkeeper and just outside the far post.

On 14 minutes Sevilla hit the woodwork when right back, Gabriel Mercado intercepted a loose pass before dribbling forward and unleashing a powerful shot which hit the the outside of the post before rebounding to safety. It looked as though the goalkeeper just about got his finger tips to it which turned it onto the post.

Minutes later the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan was silenced when Emmanuel Adebayor found Junior Caicara on the overlap down the right wing and his cross was tapped in by Elia at the back post to level the tie although Sevilla still held the advantage on away goals.

That goal produced a nervy atmosphere within the stadium and it looked to be troubling the players too and for the next 30 minutes or so the game became a tense, scrappy affair with both sides realising just what was at stake and it would remain 1-0 to the visitors until half time.

The second half begin in similar fashion but after 52 minutes Sevilla were level. Joaquin Correa done well on the left before laying off to Steven N’Zonzi who found Jesus Navas on the right wing. Navas put a teasing ball in towards the back post and Escudero met it on the run to bullet a header past Volkan in the Basaksehir goal.

After 64 minutes Sevilla had an opportunity to clinch the tie when Gabriel Mercado got behind the visitors defence and put a powerful cross in towards Correa but unfortunately for the Argentine he was unable to place his shot goal wards and it went high and wide.

Minutes later Sevilla had another golden opportunity when Ben Yedder ran at the opposition defence before passing to N’Zoni who seemingly had the goal at his mercy but his side footed effort went the wrong side of the post and the chance was lost.

On 77 minutes Sevilla did go ahead when Nolito dribbled past several Basaksehir defenders before passing to Ben Yedder who managed to slot past Volkan in the away sides goal to practically ensure Sevilla’s progression to the group stage.

The visitors weren’t done yet though and levelled the scores on the night in the 83rd minute. Sevilla failed to clear an Elia cross and the ball fell to Visca who rifled home past Sergio Rico.

In the 90th minute Istanbul Basaksehir came within inches of winning the tie on away goals when their captain, Emre Belozoglu hit the post with a fine left footed free kick from 20 yards out.

Sevilla were able to get possession of the ball in the last few minutes and held possession in the oppositions half for much of the extra four minutes that referee, Willie Collum of Scotland had added on and in the end the hosts managed to hang on for the draw that puts them into the Champions League group stages.

Sevilla will now join their compatriots Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the draw that takes place on Thursday evening and you will be able to see full details of that draw right here on
