Barcelona have begun negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over the potential signing of former Real Madrid attacking midfielder Angel Di Maria, according to Catalan newspaper Sport.
The club reportedly see him as a potential alternative in case their move for Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho fails, despite news of a fourth bid being submitted emerging on Tuesday night.
Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly open to the idea of selling the Argentine international, who plays alongside Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano for Jorge Sampaoli’s side.
Having splashed the cash to take Neymar to Paris and with another deal for Kylian Mbappe in the offing, they need to sell in order to avoid punishment from UEFA’s Financial Fair Play system.
That could make a deal for Di Maria feasible, though his past in Madrid is likely to complicate matters for some fans. He was controversially sold, at the request of Florentino Perez, despite showing some impressive form under Carlo Ancelotti.
Since leaving La Liga, Di Maria has failed to reproduce that high level of form either at Manchester United in the Premier League or in Paris in Ligue Un.
A return to La Liga could appeal to the 29-year-old if Barcelona do opt to move for Di Maria should a move for Philippe Coutinho fail.
